Heckling Hare Construction Lesson

I took a stab at John K's step by step lesson for constructing a Rod Scribner drawing. Though my drawing didn't come out very good I do think it really helped hammer home the concept of having the smaller forms wrap around the larger ones. I love Scribner's drawings but I don't copy them often as I find all those wrinkles kind of intimidating. I guess I should man up and get to studying his work. He's one of my favorite Warner's animators. I did do a couple of drawings from one of his scenes in "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery". They're way off compared to the originals so I'm going to go back and try them again.

Hi Kevin

good first try.

My critique:

Proportions are off.
Dog's cranium too small.

Details too cramped. You need to put the open spaces in above his squinty eye.

Angles are missing. You have Bugs straight up and down. In the original, his body and neck lean backward and his head tilts forward and down.

You should try to critique your own drawings and then go back and draw them again with that in mind and correct them.

I suggest you copy McKimson scenes for awhile before attempting Scribner.

Or copy some of your killer model sheets from the old cartoons. (the ones that show the construction)

The wilder stuff is always harder to analyze.

Keep at it and keep making your great site.

Your pal,

John

Hey Kevin great job! This one took me a few tries and I still doubt I came as close as you! I've been enjoying your inking samples too, they inspired me to buy a brush and give it a try myself. Thanks for posting these!

P.S.- I started a new blog devoted to practice stuff so if you want to update your links you can take off my old one.

I call this one here "Widow-Maker!"

Reading and working with the Blair book is great; finally getting to see John work his chops and step-by-step the process is even greater!

I bet your next ones get better quickly, Kevin!

Great attempt Kevin, these are really tough to get right. There are so many things to keep track of. I have made an attempt too, but will be posting it tonight if you want to have a look. I only drew Bugs as I didn't have time to do the whole scene.

Actually I have scanned it at work, so you can see it now if you like!

Thanks guys.

Thanks John, I noticed how crammed Willoughby's details were when I finished it but I didn't realize how off Bugs'was until you mentioned it. I'm gonna give it another go. Then it's back to working on construction from McKimson.
