A little more construction practice. Plus, a second or two added to some animation I posted a while back. He's supposed to be saying "What am I doing?" I haven't added the dialog track to it yet. Slowly I'll add more to it when I have the time.

I haven't spent much time working on construction lately so I'm going to start forcing myself to work at it rather than just doodling every time I pick up a pencil. So I started off working on stuff by Harvey Eisenberg, some model sheets and some funny animal comics. Some of the proportions in these drawings are terrible when compared to the originals. I've got much work to do.

Ewalt

Copied some poses (well, tried to) while watching one of my favorite Ren and Stimpy cartoons, "Out West"

A character designer I am not.

Emery Hawkins Study (pt2)

I'm sort of obsessing over Emery Hawkins' animation in "Two Gophers From Texas". Not that that's a bad thing.

Emery Hawkins Study

If you've never seen the Art Davis short "Two Gophers From Texas" you're really missing out on an incredible cartoon. Emery Hawkins animation in it is probably the wildest thing I've seen him do. Even more so than his stuff at Lantz. Anyway, I'm going to spend some time studying his scenes in that short. Here's the first go at them.

Impossible Possum Sketches

Just a few sketches while watching "Impossible Possum" for the hundredth time. Watch it on my other blog.

Just a crappy drawing with some crappy inking and crappy color.

Pencil Test

I'm been forever since I've tried animating anything so I just thought I'd try something simple and then build on it. I have to add some inbetweens still and maybe redraw a few frames. It's not part of a larger idea but I think I'll think up a gag or two and keep going with it.

More Funny Animal Studies

These are just a few drawings from Giggle and Haha comics drawn by Ken Champin and Bob Wickersham.

Flexxo Comics

I'm going to try and post a dumb comic strip or panel each week on the Flexxo blog I contribute to. Just quick sketches and bad jokes, like this one.

Eisenberg Studies

I've been trying to practice construction using some Harvey Eisenberg comics as reference. The Tom drawings look like Tom but I don't think they look very much like Eisenberg's originals. He draws great hands too, he's right up there with Ed Love in that department.

More Throckmorton

I'm still copying from the Throckmorton strip in HaHa Comics #24. I wish I knew who drew the strip. This time I tried inking with a regular brush instead of a brush pen. Not much better though.

Throckmorton

I've been reading some old Haha Comics and came across a really fantastically drawn strip called "Throckmorton". I had to try my hand at one of the panels. I think I'll be copying that strip for a little while. It was also a nice excuse to whip out some newly acquired Prismacolor markers.Though I really have to stop inking with a brush pen. I can't control it for the life of me.

George Liquor Heads

I'm excited to hear John K. will be producing some more George Liquor shorts. George is a really funny character and I loved "The God Damn George Liquor Show". He's offered advice and tips on drawing George's head properly. It's a lot harder than it looks, at least for me it is. I have trouble leaving space between George's facial features. Here's my go at it using some of the pics John posted and others from "Comic Book".

Getting Back To Practicing

It's been a long time since I've sat down and practiced drawing from model sheets. Between just moving into a new home and getting ready for a new baby in a few weeks there just hasn't been any time. I figured I'd try my hand at some Disney model sheets for awhile since I have such a hard time drawing the characters. Solid construction is still big problem for me. But that's what practice is all about, ain't it?

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Jeez, I almost forgot that I even had another blog. I haven't drawn much at all lately. Life seems to be getting in the way of that. I crapped this dog from my pencil in hopes of practicing some animation with him. Not very good but he'll do. Now I just need to make some time to actually animate something while I have the time. Come May another baby boy will be arriving and I'm pretty sure they'll be little time for drawing with all those doodie diapers to be changed. Any suggestions on the character design here?

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

I haven't picked up a pencil in a while so I sat down to get back to work on construction, practicing from a model sheet from the David Hand Animaland short "The Ostrich".

Ever have one of those days when you hate everything you draw? I hated this one the least.
